vliegzalf

VLIEGEN

Deze serie gaat over de vliegzalf/ heksenzalf en de magische planten die daarvoor gebruikt werden. De vliegzalf is een zalf waarmee heksen zich zouden hebben ingesmeerd om te kunnen 'vliegen' en dat is ook de beelden die we kennen van heksen. Correcter is het wellicht om te zeggen dat de zalf een hallucinogene en trance achtige werking heeft door bepaalde bestanddelen van de planten; de ene plant sterker dan de andere. Door de zalf op gevoelige lichaamsdelen zoals de liezen en oksels te smeren worden de stoffen makkelijker opgenomen door het lichaam. De 'beelden' die ontstaan in de persoon die de zalf op heeft gedaan zijn vergelijkbaar met trancereizen door bijvoorbeeld sjamanen.

NATUURLIJKE VORMEN

Omdat ik in mijn fotografie graag werk met natuurlijke vormen (planten, wortels etc) en gefascineerd ben door de magische en geneeskrachtige werking van planten, was de klik met het thema Hoogvliegers voor het fotofestival Goeikes (editie 2025) gelegd. Mijn serie zou een 'portret'reeks worden van 9 planten die in het recept gebruikt zouden zijn. Ik zeg bewust 'portret' omdat ik zo de planten benaderd heb; alsof ze als personen plaatsnamen voor mijn camera in mijn studio.  Ik merk dat met name de planten, die lang in mijn directe omgeving zijn geweest en ik aandachtig heb gevolgd in hun groeiproces, (enkele fotografeerde ik op locatie buiten) het beste in beeld gebracht zijn. Net als dat je bij een portretfoto van een mens ook een betere foto maakt als er een gevoel van verbinding  is tussen de fotograaf en de geportretteerde.

RECEPTEN

Er bestaan verschillende middeleeuwse recepten van de vliegzalf, waarvan de oudsten dateren uit de 15e eeuw. Uit de recepten die verschillende planten ten opzichte van elkaar beschrijven (maar ook overeenkomstige) heb ik een persoonlijke selectie gemaakt op vindbaarheid en kweekbaarheid. Deze serie bestaat dus niet uit dé planten voor dé vliegzalf. Voorzichtigheid is geboden; sommige zijn erg giftig en zelfs dodelijk, zoals de Wolsfkers, Bilzekruid en Monnikskap. Don't try this at home dus.

PLANTEN

De planten die ik heb gebruikt voor mijn Vliegzalf serie zijn Wolfskers, Bilzekruid, Monnikskap, Valeriaan, Goudsbloem, IJzerhard, Slaapbol, Huislook en Bingelkruid. 

MAGISCHE ODE

De Vliegzalf serie is een ode aan de magische wereld van planten en de hoeders van deze kennis. Ook is het een ode aan hen die ooit vervolgd werden om het hebben en delen van deze kennis en hun liefdevolle verbinding met de plantenwereld.

De serie is gepubliceerd in de catalogus van Fotofestival Goeikes editie 2025/ Hoogvliegers. 

FLYING
This series is about flying ointment/witches' ointment and the magical plants used for it. Flying ointment is an ointment that witches are said to have applied to enable them to "fly," and this is also the imagery we know of witches. It might be more accurate to say that the ointment has a hallucinogenic and trance-like effect due to certain components of the plants; some plants are more potent than others. By applying the ointment to sensitive areas such as the groin and armpits, the substances are more easily absorbed by the body. The "images" that arise in the person who has applied the ointment are comparable to trance journeys experienced by shamans, for example.

NATURAL FORMS
Because I enjoy working with natural forms (plants, roots, etc.) in my photography and am fascinated by the magical and healing properties of plants, the theme "High Flyers" for the Goeikes photo festival (2025 edition) resonated with me. My series would be a "portrait" series of nine plants used in the recipe. I deliberately use the term "portrait" because that's how I approached the plants; as if they were people sitting in front of my camera in my studio. I find that the plants that have been in my immediate vicinity for a long time and that I've attentively followed during their growth process (some of which I photographed on location outdoors) are particularly well-captured. Just as a portrait of a person also makes a better photo when there's a sense of connection between the photographer and the subject.

RECIPES
There are several medieval recipes for flying ointment, the oldest of which date back to the 15th century. From the recipes that describe different plants in relation to each other (but also similar ones), I have made a personal selection based on their accessibility and cultivation. This series therefore does not consist of the plants for the ultimate flying ointment. Caution is advised; some are very poisonous and even deadly, such as Wolfsbane, Henbane, and Monkshood. So don't try this at home.

PLANTS
The plants I used for my Flying Ointment series are Wolfsbane, Henbane, Monkshood, Valerian, Marigold, Vervain, Opium Poppy, Houseleek, and Acornwort.

MAGICAL ODE
The Vliegzalf series is an ode to the magical world of plants and the guardians of this knowledge. It is also an ode to those who were once persecuted for possessing and sharing this knowledge and their loving connection with the plant world.
